The Best Fabric Shops in London

A hand-picked guide for our sewing students in Kent and London. Whether you're sourcing cotton for your first toile or silk for a couture make, these are the shops we recommend when you want quality, choice and fair prices.

West London

Tips for beginners

Buying fabric with confidence

  • Always ask for a swatch. Most shops are happy to cut a small piece so you can test drape, press and wash before committing.
  • Buy a little extra. Add 10–20% to your pattern's fabric requirement to allow for shrinkage, pattern matching and mistakes.
  • Match the fabric to the pattern. Your pattern envelope will suggest suitable fabric types — stick close to them for your first few makes.
  • Prewash before you cut. Cotton and linen shrink; washing before cutting saves heartbreak after your first laundry cycle.
